Parent Resources For Children with AD/HD

Children with attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder (ADHD) have the same challenges as their peers but there are a few specific common struggles. The main issues cropping up for parents are difficulties with emotional regulation, self-esteem, homework and sleep. While the waiting times for assessment for ADHD are long, that does not mean there is no available support while you are waiting. I’ve listed some of the top local resources available to support you and you child.

  1. Southern Trust Website

My first port of call is the Southern Trust Website. They provide helpful resources discussing emotional regulation, sleep, homework and promoting self-esteem. They also provide a more in depth overview of the referral process for your child and what to expect from assessment. In their “ADHD Booklet” they also provide a contact number which is available for parents to use while awaiting referral.

  2. Barnardo’s Northern Ireland

Another really helpful resource in the Parent and Carer Toolbox (PACT) programme ran locally by Barnardo’s Northern Ireland. They provide workshops and one to one support through keyworkers and home visits. Referral for this service comes from within the Southern Trust and you should be referred while your are waiting on an official assessment.

  3. Parenting Focus

Parenting Focus, previously known as Parenting NI, is another excellent resource of parenting courses covering areas which often crop up in ADHD including discipline, emotional regulation and difficult behaviours. There courses are available to access through self-referral so there is no need to await referral from a healthcare professional.

  4. Family Support Hub

If you are not sure what type of support might be best for you and your family, the Family Support Hub can be an excellent starting point. They have a holistic approach and look at the family as a whole linking you in with local supports where appropriate. Family Support Hub is not ADHD specific but again are familiar with the challenges faced by parents including dealing with difficult behaviour, difficulties at school and emotional regulation. I’ve including the link for self-referral to our local support hub below.

Hopefully the above resources will give you an overview of local support available to you and your family. Your GP, health visitor and school are also a source of support while awaiting referral.
